Near Infrared Light Therapy in Durango, Colorado
Photobiomodulation (PBM) Therapy uses near infrared (NIR) light to reduce pain, inflammation, and edema, and substantially aid in recovery. PBM therapy works at the cellular level, stimulating repair and normalizing cell function. The therapeutic use of visible and NIR light has been studied for almost forty years and is used in thousands of clinics, hospitals and elite sports institutions across more than 70 nations.
Our Joovv devices deliver red and near infrared wavelengths. These are non-ionizing wavelengths, meaning they do not damage cells, but instead stimulate repair. PBMT also increases circulation so a warming sensation is often experienced.
A variety of injuries can benefit from PBMT, including muscle strains and sprains, cuts, bruises, burns, and other acute inflammatory events. PBMT has also been extensively studied as a potential treatment for major depression and anxiety. Michael Hamblin's influential 2016 paper (Shining light on the head: Photobiomodulation for brain disorders (nih.gov)) suggests that PBMT provides multiple forms of health-giving services to the brain. These include increased ATP production, improved blood flow, reduced inflammation, and growth in proteins that mitigate cell death. Hamblin proposes that PBM for brain disorders may become an important medical application of light therapy in the coming years.
